I was reading up on some of the military euphemisms which was used or are still being used by the military. Here is some of my favourites :
FUBAR - Fucked Up Beyond All Recognition. This is used to refer to missions profiles that totally gets screwed up causing the soldiers to improvise of retreat. Other acronyms used in the same vein are TOFU (Things Ordinary : Fucked Up) , SAPFU (Surpassing All Previous Fuck-Ups), SUSFU (Situation Unchanged : Still Fucked Up) and of course my personal favourite TUIFU (The Ultimate In Fuck-Ups).
ADJUSTMENT OF THE FRONT - A nicer way of saying 'retreat' . The word 'Retreat' doesn't exist in modern military euphemism, instead they conduct RETROGRADE MANEUVERS or REDEPLOY THEIR FORCES. When surrounded and in a totally FUBAR condition the military just EXFILTRATES. It's interesting to note that the first use of alternative slanf for retreat was first recorder being used by a Macedonian commander named Antigonus Gonatas around 250 BC who refused to admit that he had retreated and insted described his movement as A STRATEGIC MOVEMENT TO THE REAR .
I also found the origins behind the much used " BUY THE FARM" or "BOUGHT THE FARM" for years I have been using it without knowing what it really means. Edward Estlin Cummings wrote in a poem " Nobody Loses All The Time"which is about an 'Uncle Sol' who was a failure in every farm he buys in life , when he finally dies he managed to achieve sucess .... by starting a worm farm :P

i remember we all cried like the Missouri
when my Uncle Sol's coffin lurched because
somebody pressed a button
