" Mari-mari , beli ini CD , sangat clear punya ! Garenti baik punya ! " said the pirated CD seller as he peddled out his pirated CD/DVD/VCDs. The throngs of people surrounding the stall, some idly browsing some allready in the process of haggling the price, are normal ordinary Malaysians. Malaysians who are buying pirated goods.
Ask any of them and they probably won't admit to commiting a crime. The more honest ones will probably just shrug and give a guilty smile. Why do they do it ?
Lets look at the pricing of Lord Of The Rings : Fellowship of The Ring - RM 200 (extended version). Now if we assume that the price for all three movies is the same we get a grand total of RM 600 ... good god that is almost enough to buy an electric guitar or 3 soundblaster 2 Audigy cards or 75 'Magic: The Gathering' booster pack ..... (Averages to Rm 100 / DVD )
Compare the price that DVD pirates sell it at : Rm 50 O_0 (Averages to Rm 8/DVD)
The original is 12x the price of the pirated DVD ! Scary huh ...... guess I won't really blame people for buying pirated stuff ... the price is simply too high.
How do these pirates manage to sell their DVDs for so low a price ? Probably because they dont pay the copyrights and the quality of their production is low ... but still ... 12 x ... :(
I have heard from some people that the actual cost of producing a DVD is actually very low since they are mass produced. My theory is that the price of original DVD are very high for the simple purpose of getting more cash out of consumers. Maybe they should start considering a price reduction to compete with the pirates. Maybe they might do that ... yeah and maybe pigs will fly . |
