Sorry for the late respond. I didn't come to the blog for a few day. I do have a few phone that can recommend to magnus. But before that seeing some people don't even know what is edge. I might as well explain here.
First of all what we need to see is the mobile network. Most of the handphone now are using 2G network or 2.5G network (command known as GPRS). But because the data transfer rate is between 9.6kbps to 64kbps which is too slow for large amount of data to transport. Mobile network is now moving to Highspeed Mobile Network. So far there are only 2, 2.75G which is known as EDGE (transfer rate is 115kbps) and 3G. 3G transfer rate is different for different technology in used. But normally is 144kbps, 384kbps and 2mbps. But because 3G is still a quite expensive technology. EDGE have become the altenative seeing it is a older technology so it is cheaper.
Celcom, Malaysia launch the 3G plan in 2004 and is the first company in the world to successfully move into 3G age. Before that some Europe company try to implement this technology and the company end up bankrupt and the plan had been delay ever since. Digi, Malaysia is third company in Asia using EDGE technology.
After use the search in nokia.com here is some phone that can use EDGE technology. 1. Nokia 9500 (Link) 2. Nokia 7270 (Link) 3. Nokia 6681 (Link) 4. Nokia 6680 (Link) 5. Nokia N series (Link)
I will recommend Nokia N series because of your need to do video conference and modem dialing. Basicly if the handphone is a 3G support handphone. Then Most likely it will support EDGE seeing it is a older technology. Sorry I just have enough time for Nokia because nokia is the main phone supplier for EDGE in Malaysia. But you can try searching Samsung and Sony Ericson also. |

Thanks man, I'll go check the links over the weekend. 144kbps so slow ah!!!
What about download rates? The sample unit I tested in KLCC was giving me like 64kbps file downloads, should be okay for torrents and Limewire right.

First of all is kilo bites per second not kilo Bytes per second. So if 64kbps meaning is 8kBps download speed. Is better than normal dial up modem but to use torrrents to download movie will be a bit .... Limewire should be ok if you only want to download song. EDGE highest speed should be able to reach 16 kBps.

bummer man. Am I destined to be forever cut off from the internet while at my apartment?!?!
I suppose 16 kBps isn't so bad for downloading MP3 files. Will just go back to buying DVDs again. I'll say I'm old school.
Wonder if I can use it for webcam though, like over MSN or Yahoo messenger. Any idea. Sorry for these lame-o questions but I never really had to calculate what kind of speed I'd need for voice-hat/webcam

It should be able to do video conferencing. So I guess you should be able to use webcam.

Hey thanks Sai!! I was thinking about switching to either Maxis or Celcom but after going through several forums I discovered that service is crap and their upload rates are extremely low which is terrible for voice-chat/webcam.
Going to stick with DiGi for now unless I can get wireless broadband. Apparently no one wants to cater to the Setapak area, too many kampung people I guess *sigh*.
Buying my phone today!!! I thing I'm gonna get the 6680, maybe second hand. Or the 3230. Will see how it goes.
